Common use

Afrin (oxymetazoline) is prescribed for temporary relief of nasal congestion associated with colds, hay fever, sinusitis, or other upper respiratory conditions. It works as a topical decongestant, narrowing swollen blood vessels in the nasal passages to improve airflow.

Dosage and direction

Afrin is usually administered as 1–2 sprays in each nostril every 10–12 hours, not exceeding 2 doses in 24 hours. Shake the bottle gently before use. Avoid using for more than 3 consecutive days to prevent rebound congestion.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disorders, diabetes, or glaucoma. Avoid prolonged use to prevent nasal irritation or dependency.

Contraindications

Do not use Afrin if allergic to oxymetazoline or any component of the spray. It is contraindicated in patients with severe cardiovascular disease or untreated high blood pressure.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include temporary burning, stinging, sneezing, or dryness in the nose. Rare but serious side effects may include increased blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or severe allergic reactions.

Drug interaction

Afrin may interact with other sympathomimetic drugs or medications for high blood pressure. Inform your doctor of all prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and supplements you are taking.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, use it as soon as you remember. Do not exceed the recommended daily doses.

Overdose

Overuse may cause severe nasal irritation, headache, high blood pressure, or rapid heartbeat. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store Afrin at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
