Common use

Creon (pancrelipase) is prescribed for patients with conditions that reduce pancreatic enzyme production, such as cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, or after pancreatic surgery. It helps improve digestion, nutrient absorption, and reduce symptoms like bloating, diarrhea, and fatty stools.

Dosage and direction

Creon is taken orally with every meal and snack, usually at the beginning or during the meal. Dosage is individualized based on age, weight, diet, and severity of pancreatic insufficiency. Capsules should be swallowed whole; do not crush or chew, but the contents may be sprinkled on soft food if swallowing is difficult.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have allergies to pork products (source of the enzyme), high blood uric acid, or history of fibrosing colonopathy. Monitor for signs of abdominal pain, constipation, or allergic reactions.

Contraindications

Do not use Creon if allergic to pancrelipase or any component of the capsule.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, or diarrhea. Rare but serious effects may include fibrosing colonopathy, allergic reactions, or high uric acid levels. Seek medical attention if severe symptoms occur.

Drug interaction

Creon has minimal systemic absorption, so interactions are rare. Avoid taking simultaneously with iron supplements or medications that are sensitive to pH changes unless instructed by your doctor.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose with the next meal or snack. Do not take extra capsules at once to compensate for the missed dose.

Overdose

Excessive doses may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, high uric acid levels, or diarrhea. Seek medical attention if overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store Creon at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Keep capsules in the original container, tightly closed, and out of reach of children.
