Common use

Olumiant is a prescription medication used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adults who have not responded well to other treatments. It is also approved for severe alopecia areata and COVID-19-related inflammation in certain hospitalized patients. The active ingredient, Baricitinib, is a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor that works by reducing inflammation and regulating the immune system. Olumiant helps relieve symptoms like joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, improving quality of life.

Dosage and direction

The typical dosage of Olumiant is 2 mg once daily, taken by mouth with or without food. In some cases, a 1 mg or 4 mg dose may be prescribed depending on the patient’s condition and tolerance. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water and taken at the same time each day. Dosage adjustments may be necessary in patients with kidney or liver impairment.

Precautions

Before using Olumiant, inform your doctor if you have a history of infections, tuberculosis, blood clots, liver or kidney disease, or cancer. Regular monitoring through blood tests may be required to check liver enzymes, cholesterol levels, and white blood cell counts. Avoid live vaccines during treatment. Olumiant may weaken the immune system, increasing the risk of infections.

Contraindications

Olumiant is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Baricitinib or any of its components. It should not be used in patients with severe active infections, such as tuberculosis or sepsis. The medication is not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly necessary. Caution is advised in patients with a history of blood clots or cardiovascular events.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include upper respiratory tract infections, nausea, headache, and elevated cholesterol levels. Some patients may experience changes in liver enzymes, reduced white blood cell counts, or urinary tract infections. Rare but serious side effects include blood clots, serious infections, and increased risk of certain cancers. Seek medical attention if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or unusual bruising.

Drug interaction

Olumiant may interact with other medications that affect the immune system, such as biologic DMARDs, immunosuppressants, or strong CYP3A4 inhibitors/inducers. Concurrent use with certain antiviral or antifungal agents may alter its effect. Inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you are taking. Drug interactions may necessitate dosage changes or close monitoring.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of Olumiant, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at once to make up for a missed one. Consistency is important for maintaining treatment effectiveness.

Overdose

In case of an overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, dizziness, or increased susceptibility to infection. There is no specific antidote for Baricitinib overdose. Treatment will typically involve supportive care and monitoring.

Storage

Store Olumiant at room temperature (15–30°C / 59–86°F), away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the tablets in their original container with the lid tightly closed. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the package. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
