Common use

Phenergan Syrup (promethazine) is used to treat allergic reactions, hay fever, motion sickness, nausea, vomiting, and to provide mild sedation. It works by blocking histamine receptors and affecting certain areas of the brain that control nausea and sedation.

Dosage and direction

Phenergan Syrup should be taken exactly as directed by a healthcare provider. It is usually taken by mouth with or without food. A proper measuring device should be used for liquid doses. Do not exceed the prescribed amount.

Precautions

Before using Phenergan, inform your doctor if you have asthma, sleep apnea, lung disease, glaucoma, liver disease, seizures, gastrointestinal obstruction, urinary retention, or cardiovascular conditions. This medication may cause drowsiness—avoid driving or operating machinery. Alcohol increases sedative effects and should be avoided.

Contraindications

Do not use Phenergan if you are allergic to promethazine or other phenothiazines. It is contraindicated in children under 2 years old due to the risk of severe breathing problems. It should not be used in individuals with severe CNS depression or certain respiratory conditions.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, dry mouth, constipation, or restlessness. Serious side effects may include breathing difficulties, severe confusion, seizures, irregular heartbeat, jaundice, or severe allergic reaction. Seek medical attention if serious symptoms develop.

Drug interaction

Phenergan may interact with sedatives, sleeping pills, opioids, antidepressants, antipsychotics, muscle relaxants, seizure medications, and alcohol. Inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, take it when you remember unless it is close to the next scheduled dose. Skip the missed dose if needed—do not double the dose.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms may include extreme drowsiness, confusion, slow or shallow breathing, seizures, or loss of consciousness. Seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Storage

Store Phenergan Syrup at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children and pets.
